Aesthetic Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery is the name of a 5-year specialty training program that is entered with the Medical Specialty Examination after graduating from the Faculty of Medicine in our country.
The word plastic used in the term plastic surgery originates from the Greek word “plastike” and means reshaping and shaping. Correction of congenital or acquired deformities in the human body, from the skull to the toes, in terms of “shape” and “function” is the main subject of plastic surgery.
Congenital facial and skull deformities, cleft lip, cleft palate, chin deformities, auricle deformities, congenital hand and body anomalies, congenital tumors, soft tissue masses and treatment of moles are some of the areas of interest of plastic surgery.
Aesthetic or cosmetic surgery is a subgroup of plastic surgery and is a discipline where visuality is more prominent, such as nose, face, breast or body shaping.
Aesthetic surgery aims to achieve an aesthetically more ideal, younger and more beautiful appearance even if the function is normal.
For example, rhinoplasty to an arched nose or breast aesthetics to a sagging breast will make the organs in question look more beautiful and make the person feel better. The word reconstruction can be translated into Turkish as “reconstruction or reconstruction”.
Reconstructive surgery deals with the reconstruction of structures whose integrity has been disrupted due to burns, injuries or tumor removal using various surgical techniques and restoring them to their former form and function.
Repairing the bones of a person whose facial bones were broken in a traffic accident with plate screw systems, replacing a severed finger or hand using microsurgical methods, replacing the skin parts that disappeared in burns, repairing deformities that develop after burns or reconstructing that area by replacing the tissue deficiencies that occur after a tumor removed are examples of the areas of interest of Reconstructive Surgery.
